K&L Gates Welcomes Sydney Energy and Infrastructure Partner

Sydney – Global law firm K&L Gates continues to strengthen its energy, infrastructure and resources team with the appointment of Matt Baumgurtel as a partner in its Sydney office.

Baumgurtel joins K&L Gates from leading global renewable energy projects developer FRV, where he was general counsel, company secretary, and an executive director for the Asia Pacific region. He was previously a senior associate at a global law firm in the Asia Pacific region and at an Australian national law firm.

Baumgurtel has 15 years of experience advising on energy and infrastructure projects and M&A and cross border transactions in Australia and throughout the Asia Pacific region, particularly in the renewable energy sector. He represents project developers, sponsors, investors, financiers, and other stakeholders in wind, solar, thermal, transmission, energy storage, and other energy projects. “I look forward to combining my extensive renewable energy experience with K&L Gates’ leading global energy practice to deliver strategic commercial legal advice to my clients at each stage of the energy/infrastructure asset lifecycle,” stated Baumgurtel.

Nick Nichola, K&L Gates’ Managing Partner, Australia, commented: “Matt is an innovative and entrepreneurial lawyer with unparalleled commercial and legal experience in the energy, infrastructure, and environment industry. His extensive knowledge and experience in solar photovoltaic, oil & gas, power generation, energy policy, and electricity distribution will significantly bolster our capabilities to provide leading edge advice to clients not only in Australia but also across the K&L Gates global platform.”

Baumgurtel’s arrival follows the recent additions of several other Australian partners to K&L Gates’ energy, infrastructure and resources practice area, including Sydney construction and infrastructure partner Simon Ashworth and Melbourne projects and infrastructure partners Luke Westmore and Zac Kerr, with the practice area also having welcomed lawyers in numerous other parts of the world during the past two years, including London, Seoul, Taipei, Texas, New York, and Washington, D.C.
